Hi all! We’ve been developing a mod for Freelancer for quite some time. There is currently a shortage of story-driven arcade space action games, so we continue to work hard on our project for a long time.
We have released a new version with 6 ready-made missions. With voice acting and polished gameplay. We showed all the most interesting things in the trailer below. What kind of beast is our project? Read below.
What is Freelancer?
If you’re not familiar with this great game, it’s an open-world space action game. With an interesting story campaign, and once good online battles (now online is more dead than alive).
Space Freelancer is compact due to engine limitations. This turns it into a kind of “Witcher from the world of space games”, no huge spaces and countless parsecs of empty space. In this world, getting to another planet is like getting to another village, and between them there are a lot of different places where you can profit from something.
What is the Nomad Legacy?
This is a dream project whose goal was to revive the ideas of the "Freelancer that we lost". We’re talking about Freelancer, which was developed under the leadership of Chris Roberts (now known for Star Citizen) until he sold the project and his studio to Microsoft.
Ultimately, the project turned into a kind of symbiosis between “a different look at the game,” restoring the game’s capabilities and the desire to continue the Freelancer story.

1. New game world with more features: improved mining, courier missions, specialized mining ships.2. Animation of everything: almost all ships have animation of folding wings, more animations at stations in space, animations inside stations, etc.d. etc.n..3. Deep customization of the ship, pumping in NFS Underground style: changing engines, generators and other equipment.
4. Reasonable auto-leveling of everything, levels are only occasionally tied to systems, in other places the game works on the Metroidvania principle: you will need to get access keys.
5. Improved interface that allows you to more effectively attack enemies whose engines are now destroyed. There are also cool missions against stations that have vulnerable points, also marked by the interface.

Graphonium for the picky eye
If you are afraid of getting dirty with the soap of 2003, then don’t worry: this is not about our project. We are specially engaged in improving textures, while completely preserving their authenticity and canonicity.
We redrawn some textures completely by hand, some were “stamped” from other games, and some were simply improved with a neural network with minimal retouching. Yes, there is no way to hide the years of an old man’s life, but if you have a FullHD or higher monitor, then your suffering when playing our mod will be minimal.
Do you want to make sure? A year ago we already posted a video with the results of our work. The current version adds even more new textures. In particular, we redrew the textures of the most beautiful ship in the game: Valkyrie.
Current status of the project
The project is currently in "early access". Much still needs to be completed, the graphics have not been improved everywhere, and there are only 6 of the same missions out of the planned 13. The same pumped up game world is not ready in all systems. Now the project is assembled in a form that allows you to comfortably go through the current set of story missions.
But don’t despair, to these 6 missions will be added 2 additional ones, which can be launched separately from the story: survival And megagun.
In this mission you will have to charge the power generators of the local Death Star. Energy sources are scattered throughout the location, you will have to find them. As a result, with the help of a megagun you can blow up an enemy planet. Now this is a prototype, and in the future such missions will be available in the normal world and for completing them you will receive a prize.
But in this mission you will have to defend yourself from crowds of enemies. You have your own fleet that spawns allied ships. And there are impending enemy ships that will try to disable your battleships and also bring their own. The top enemy fighters will appear from enemy battleships.
