DLC, which was a rare occurrence five years ago, is now a completely natural system for adding life to the game after its release. Players are often happy to grab another portion of their favorite dish. A special “delicacy” is the plot additions that give more information about your favorite universe. Vergil’s downfall for DmC: Devil May Cry is just that.
So what do we have? Dante defeated Virgil, but did not kill him. He, having left through the portal, ends up on his father’s grave and falls exhausted on it. After which all the action takes place in the head of the irrepressible Nephilim. (However, these are just my assumptions – they won’t tell us the actual location of the action) Therefore, we will hardly see other characters in the add-on. Unless Eve runs to the light, and Virgil has glitches of Dante and Kat. All this creates a feeling of intimacy of the action, which is very twofold: on the one hand, no one needs to be remembered, on the other hand, the small budget is obvious. We will return to the issue of financing more than once.
This whole “story” is presented in the form of small animated inserts. They were made, frankly, to a fault: the appearance of the characters does not match their appearance in the game, and the colors are limited to white and black with slight shades of gray.
The mechanics have not changed since the original. We still have one melee and ranged weapon and two of their modes – angelic and demonic. But this is presented in a stripped down form: the appearance of the sword does not change when switching modes, and the pistols are replaced with ghost swords. Plus, there are no analogues of “Aquila” and “Eriks” here at all.
Naturally, this led to a Nonukcasinosites.co.uk/review/black-magic-casino/ change in balance. While Dante is better off fighting enemies with demonic weapons, his brother almost always uses his angelic side. “Dash” and “Twister”, which since the second Diablo have already been found in a bunch of projects, will be the most important ways to eliminate evil spirits. Small, but a change from the original. The main problem here is purely aesthetic and subjective – “Yamato” does not feel like a katana at all: it is still the same “Rebel”, replaced in appearance.
There is a lot of shredded meat provided, but they always appear in the same combinations. Although they didn’t take all the monsters from the original, which is probably good, but in these conditions it’s unpleasant. There are only two new types of bestiary: the Jailer, which becomes boring towards the end, and Klok, who is more difficult than the only boss found in the add-on. This boss, by the way, is called “Devastated Virgil”, and the battle with him, while losing in terms of staging to the battles with the main villains of the original game, pulls out with a pleasant complexity, which, by the way, applies to almost the entire DLC.
Since the action takes place in Virgil’s head, the surrounding interior is corresponding: fragments of the world in space. And nothing more. Absolutely. At the same time, not a single new element of the location was noticed: one way or another they were in the original, which again brings to mind the idea of the budget. But what was a pleasant surprise was the diversity of the platform part. Now there are platforms that constantly spin around their axis, so you won’t be able to stand on them for a long time, and intangible objects that become usable only when you hit them with the Swift Sword (this is Vergil’s long-range weapon, if anyone didn’t understand), and even then not for long.
Since the mechanics have not changed, the controls remain the same, with one small amendment: there are no additional weapons, and, therefore, the gamepad d-pad is useless. A small, but quite important, simplification.
Externally the game looks very good. The work with the engine was done to a high quality, so there are no annoying moments. But the design itself is a bit of a let down: everything looks too monotonous. The background has never changed, the walls are absolutely the same.
Working with sound is the biggest problem in the add-on. The lack of budget primarily affected here. Instead of excellent licensed music from Combichrist and Noisia, they play incomprehensible ambient music, which also does not fit in with the action.
In general, Vergil’s downfall has nothing that made the original DmC so unique: no varied level design, no great music, no heaps of weapons that are convenient to combine, thus making 20-30-hit combos. But it’s worth noting the efforts of the developers – Ninja Theory did everything in their power, there simply wasn’t enough budget for the expansion.
Pros: still the same combat system, pleasant complexity;
Cons: ragged narration, unpleasant level design, weak music;
